Remembering

October 30, 2006

Kyle Lake is someone I never met, but seeing the love that people had for him in the aftermath of his death (a year ago today) really struck me as I read about him on many blogs and news feeds for days to come. You can learn more about him, view a trailer of the dvd that was created, and participate in efforts to support his family here. He wrote a couple books you can check out here and here.

Several days ago I had switched back my laptop background to words he often used in his benediction:

love God. embrace beauty. live life to the fullest.

consider those words yourself. from what i can tell, kyle was a person who attempted to live this out… all you have to do is a google search or read the footprints collection on his website to see that the way he lived life had and continues to have a huge impact on people.

here is an excerpt from his last sermon (which he never got to share) which was based on the movie Garden State in a series he was doing regarding faith and film:

Live. And Live Well.
BREATHE. Breathe in and Breathe deeply. Be PRESENT. Do not be past. Do not be future. Be now.
On a crystal clear, breezy 70 degree day, roll down the windows and FEEL the wind against your skin. Feel the warmth of the sun.
If you run, then allow those first few breaths on a cool Autumn day to FREEZE your lungs and do not just be alarmed, be ALIVE.
Get knee-deep in a novel and LOSE track of time.
If you bike, pedal HARD… and if you crash then crash well.
Feel the SATISFACTION of a job well done—a paper well-written, a project thoroughly completed, a play well-performed.
If you must wipe the snot from your 3-year old’s nose, don’t be disgusted if the Kleenex didn’t catch it all… because soon he’ll be wiping his own.
If you’ve recently experienced loss, then GRIEVE. And Grieve well.
At the table with friends and family, LAUGH. If you’re eating and laughing at the same time, then might as well laugh until you puke. And if you eat, then SMELL. The aromas are not impediments to your day. Steak on the grill, coffee beans freshly ground, cookies in the oven. And TASTE. Taste every ounce of flavor. Taste every ounce of friendship. Taste every ounce of Life. Because-it-is-most-definitely-a-Gift.

Hey ~ okay, from the “other” Vancouver, I say THANK YOU! I loved this post. (I stumbled upon your blog while clicking “next blog” on the top of other blogspots. 🙂 )

This one moved me ~ often I forget to just enjoy the amazing life God has given us to live. My 6 11/12’s year old son (he turns 7 in 20 days) and my 4 year old son lose themselves in their imagination and play and enjoyment of God’s creation…and too often I find myself getting after them for being fully ALIVE. Thank you for sharing Kyle’s thoughts………..they have stirred my soul as the wind outside my window rustles up the leaves on the streets.
